Falls Can Happen in Seconds. Many Can Be Prevented.

More than one in four adults age 65 and older fall each year, according to the CDC, and most falls happen at home during everyday moments: getting out of bed, stepping into the shower, carrying laundry down the stairs, or turning around in the kitchen.

After more than 5,000 home visits as a physical therapist, I've seen that the most common fall risks are often hiding in plain sight. A loose rug, poor lighting at night, a low toilet, or a walker that isn't set up correctly. The good news is that most of these can be fixed once you know what to look for.

MEET THE AUTHOR

Jesus G. Altamiranda Molina, PT, DPT

I'm a Doctor of Physical Therapy who helps older adults stay strong, steady, and independent at home. Through more than 5,000 home visits, I've worked with seniors right where falls happen: in their hallways, bathrooms, kitchens, and on their stairs.

Not everyone can have a physical therapist come to their home, so I put the same practical approach I use with my patients into this manual, so more families can benefit from it.
